Analysing songs

We had to analyse songs and write about them.
    • Song lyrics can be used to learn more about:
  • Rhyming
  • Metaphors and Similes
  • Alliteration
  • Imagery
  • Personification

Possible questions for analyzing song lyrics:
What is the song about?
What does the title have to do with the song?
What message is the song trying to convey to the listener?
What three poetic sound devices, (rhyming, alliteration, accent, onomatopoeia) can you find? Write the lines that you find each devices in and explain.
What two figurative devices (metaphor, simile, personification) can you find in the lyrics? Write the lines and explain each one.

Learning Task - choose one song at a time from the list above. Complete the above questions and convey your answers onto this google doc. There are some powerful themes and some great songs. By deconstructing (Making Meaning)  this during reading time, it will help you when writing, (Creating Meaning) your song.

Song :  Firework, by Katy Perry

What is it about : Boosting your confidence+self esteem and let your inner self shine. It shows in the video that society is bringing them down but they get back up and be themselves

What are they trying to tell you : To be confident and be yourself. Don’t be afraid to be you.

What three poetic sound devices, (rhyming, alliteration, accent, onomatopoeia) can you find?  ??????????????????

What does the title have to do with the song : (Firework) let your fireworks shine out and burst into the sky.

  1. Some songs have poetic devices such as rhyming, alliteration and accents. Some songs don't. If you didn't find any, maybe you could check out our Rm 12 blogs because half of the class chose Firework and ask some other learners in our class some questions. Miss O'B
