Term 4 Writing Assessment
Today we completed our Term 4 writing assessment. We had 5 minutes to plan, 30 minutes to complete our first draft and 5 minutes to proof read. Here Is what I wrote…
The Gymnastics Competition:)
Earlier this year not too long ago actually, was a gymnastics competition. Each and every year we have one competition at my local gymnastics club. It's a cool opportunity to get placings and medals to go with them. This year I wasn’t too organised and was pretty scared about forgetting what my routine was or backing out. Surprisingly, I only forgot one mainly because I didn’t practice the routine at all and made up 0 moves. That was my beam but it didn’t worry me because I just made it up as I went and got inspiration from others!
Lara and georgia were with me at the time of the competition, so we were like a team. Apparatus after apparatus we finally made it through all 4. Beam, bar, floor, and vault. Of course it took a while to move onto the next apparatus because we had to wait for everyone else in our group ( We were put in groups of about 10) to be finished. It was like a rotation where you go to the next apparatus then someone will go to the apparatus you were just on. Personally, I think I did best at vault and floor because I practiced them the most and I think I did a pretty good job overall. Especially at floor because I got a placing on, yayy!
Now for the most nerve racking and also really really exciting part of the event. Prizegiving. This is the final part when the coaches give out the certificates for participation. 1st-3rd also runner up like 4th and 5th on all apparatus and a few spot prizes at the end for those who may not of gotten a placing. While they gathered up all the scores Lara, Georgia and I were nervously biting our fingers while waiting for the big moment. Finally the 10 minutes had past and everyone was ready to hear the results…
The first apparatus they called results on were bar. Georgia got first place! Lara and I got nothing on that. Next was vault. No placings there! Now for my favourite…. Floor! 3rd place… 2nd place…. 1st place…. Jazz! I was so happy to come first and it was a huge accomplishment for me! All I had to do now was wait. Bar, nothing. Lastly was overall and I got 3rd place. For me, 3rd place overall and first on floor was amazing. The feeling of relief ran through my veins. Spot prizes were alright but I didn’t get anything but Lara did! To be honest, I didn’t like the prizes at all but Lara got the best prize and I’m happy for her!
After the big event I had sweat all over me so we went home, Lara came home with us and we got a frozen coke for doing so well at the competition. It was a pretty good refreshment even though I had to get mum to turn the air conditioning all the way up because I was sooooo hot! I had such a fun time at the competition and I’m so happy with how I did and I’m super excited for next years comp where I can hopefully do even better! Now my two medals and participation hang on my wall so whenever someone comes into my room they can see how proud I am!

Year 7 Social
Last term Sheppard ( the best house ) and Hillary house got the opportunity to be in a school social. We did partner dancing, line dancing, and even some dances where you switch partners. I had a really good time and I loved all the delicious food plus yelling out "SHEPPARD!!!" With all my friends. It was surprising to see the fire alarm go off as we were entering the hall! ( There wasn't an actual fire )

Analysing songs
We had to analyse songs and write about them.
- Song lyrics can be used to learn more about:
- Rhyming
- Metaphors and Similes
- Alliteration
- Imagery
- Personification
Possible questions for analyzing song lyrics:
What is the song about?
What does the title have to do with the song?
What message is the song trying to convey to the listener?
What three poetic sound devices, (rhyming, alliteration, accent, onomatopoeia) can you find? Write the lines that you find each devices in and explain.
What two figurative devices (metaphor, simile, personification) can you find in the lyrics? Write the lines and explain each one.
Learning Task - choose one song at a time from the list above. Complete the above questions and convey your answers onto this google doc. There are some powerful themes and some great songs. By deconstructing (Making Meaning) this during reading time, it will help you when writing, (Creating Meaning) your song.

Nucleation
In science we are learning about nucleation and how it works. Since we love experiments we decided to the coke and mentos experiment.
We tested out 1 mentos : 1m high and it went for 360 seconds. With 4 mentos : 2.75m and went for 180 seconds. And finally 7 : 3m and only 90 seconds. As you can tell, the more mentos added the higher it goes and the shorter it bubbles for. Other stuff you can try are the dancing raisins experiment. click here for the dancing raisins experiment

Tin foil sculptures!
This week in room 12 we have been creating tin foil sculptures. We learned how to measure the foil out properly and sculpt it into something sporty, that links to our inquiry ( The human machine ). I love to do gymnastics so I decided to sculpt it into a gym pose. After that we went into a sunny spot outside to find a shadow that we could outline, then colour in with marker. Here is the link to the video we used : clip

Orienteering
We have been learning about co-ordinates, reading maps, compass bearings, directions and using an atlas.
On Tuesday afternoon we had the opportunity to partake in orienteering with the Hawkes Bay Orienteering club. They set up two courses around the school.
The first course was fun but hard at the same time as it was my first time orienteering. I think I enjoyed it!
The second course was more challenging and had more to complete, it was definitely a lot more fun because I knew most of the locations from the last course!
Insert your photos.

The dragon slayer
The dragon slayer
In a time when dragons threatened mankind, there was only one man who fought against them all. His name is Tarragon. He and his brave battle horse Black Bull, roamed the desert in search of these terrifying monsters. But things don't always turn out as they should…
Being a dragon slayer wasn’t always easy, that was his job of course. Fighting them day in day out, a bit tiring really. How does he do it! maybe it was time for a change. Could he be someone else than just brave, fearless, heroic, muscular, I think i've said enough.. But anyways I’ll get back on track, maybe there was more to him. Who knows?
I mean, probably not. Well, he looks terrifying and heroic at the same time. Let me describe his looks to you, see what you think.
Firstly Tarragon has restless, beady eyes. He also has pretty pointy eyebrows which makes it hard to tell if he is mad or not.
Lastly, the biggest feature I could possibly describe about his facials would be his huge pointy chin. Just wow. Now, His body is extremely muscular with a few bruises and scratches that look like scars but that's about it.
His personalities? Hmm, how do I put this.. I think he has two sides of personalities, If that made any sense at all. Ok well I’ll try to put it in better english. Tarragons first side is what I like to call Fearless, Heroic, Scary, Brave, Adventurous,
But I still think he could be... Kind, Compassionate and so much more!
I don't know for sure though, we need more information for that to be solved!

ANZAC Art
This is my ANZAC logo art that I created during reading time. It represents all the soldiers who went and fought in war and possibly passed. Lest we forget
Jamie Mcdell
This is my presentation about Jamie McDell. I had to research her during reading time and find out as much about her as possible so I could put it into this slide.
Instafood
The delightful sushi and starbucks frappe.
I gaze out into the store. Right next to the machine where “magic happens”, As my friend lara likes to say. We both love starbucks. I clap my hands silently and clench my teeth making a weird face. Of course A heap of people stare at me but I don't care. All I want is the drink.
At last. the drink was ready and lara has full hands carrying our drinks and a surprise food I didn't know about. We sit down on a bench and she reveals the food. “SUSHI!!”. Lara takes a close look at the food. DE-lish! We think to ourselves. The food looked so satisfying and we were desperately holding on to take a bite and have a sip of our starbucks.
Before we get right into it we are delighted by the wonderful smell of the sushi. Not too fishy and freshly cooked sushi rise. Mmmmmm…
Now. The greatest part of getting the whole mean is to eat it. I bite into the juicy sushi and sip my delish frappe.
within a few seconds the meal is gone. Yummmy!

Flag debate - which side are you on?
Between the 3rd and 24th March 2016 there will be a referendum held in New Zealand as to whether we should officially change the flag. A referendum is when the public (over 18) are asked to vote on a question from the government about our nation. The public will be deciding between the current NZ flag and the Silver Fern Flag.
New zealand has an unique flag history. In 1902, New Zealand's flag we have today became official. Did you know that some of the history in the flag is from the blue union jack which is symbolized on the flag itself. A very popular subject related to new zealand's history is the Treaty of Waitangi there was also the White disk which was going to be on one of the 3-4 official flags we have had in the past.f
One side of the referendum is to keep the flag. Also one of the only reasons we should change our flag is because it is similar to australia's. We should also keep it as it could be hard for some, ( mainly older people ) as they have lived with it either their whole lives or have just really liked it in general. Remember, it costs $26 million dollars for a little thing like changing the flag when it’s fine how it is!
John key and the national party would like to change the flag, do you?. It is wayyy too close to Australia’s and what if we copied them in the first place on accident or even on purpose. Come on, we need to be recognisable. Of course the current flag made history but with a new flag we could all have a new beginning, an opportunity to start fresh!
Well, I have made two sides on the flag change, what side are you on? I personally don’t mind either way, as long as we have a flag! Really deep inside of me says that I don’t want to change it for all its history but both ways work and I will be happy if it does get changed and even if it doesn’t. Now all I have to do is wait for results on what's going to happen next.
Author's purpose
This is my powtoon on the author's purpose. It explains how you find out why an author wrote a piece of text and will help you in situations where you need to find out why they wrote it.
Flag referendum and Search tips
- Don’t use wikipedia!
- Use site:url to find a specific website!
- Can’t find a website anymore? use cache:url!
- Use * for missing/unknown words in a sentence.
- Searching for particular file type use : file type:pdf
- Only use key words!
- Copy and paste an image in google images url for similar images
8. To find something that is close to another subject use eg. -fishing
9. Needing similar sites/images to what you have? related:url
10. Use minus signs to disclude things you don't want
We then used a table to answer questions and ensure we had three sources of information for each question. From this we placed the information into our own words.
My questions and answers :
Why does it cost so much to change the flag?
- It costs so much because the people who send out all the voting papers have to play for it to be shipped out to everyone and for them to actually be made
Why are we changing the flag in the first place?
- Because it Needs to be instantly recognisable as it is very close to Australia's
I think we should keep the flag for all the history it has made and is making today. I also don’t really mind if it gets changed or not but that is just my opinion.
